George Bowen Obituary

Madison Co. Democrat, Apr. 21, 1897

Death of a Former Madison County Recorder

Mr. GEORGE BOWEN, a former citizen of our town and Recorder of Madison county for two terms, died at his home near Homer, Champaign county, Ills., on the 6th inst., in the 75th year of his age. He was born near Wooster, O., on Aug. 28, 1822, and came with his parents to the adjoining county of Clark when a young man, and eleven years later, in 1833, to this (Madison) county. He taught school about 12 years, and served as Recorder of Madison county from 1858 to 1863. In the fall of 1864 he moved to the vicinity of Homer, Ills., where he resided until his death, which resulted from paralysis, followed by an attack of the grip. While a resident of our town Mr. B. was united in marriage to Miss ELIZA HARRISON, a teacher in our public schools. Five children were born of the union, four of whom - one daughter and four sons [sic], with the widow, surviving him. The deceased was a genial, cultured gentleman, whose death will cause regret to his many old-time friends here in London and vicinity.
